145. On awards

Marslow said that once the basic needs of human beings are met, their most pressing desire is recognition by others. Perhaps, this is the reason why we have so many awards and honours in every field. It is always nice to get recognized for one's achievements. This makes one feel proud and spurs one to achieve bigger heights. Awards also inspire others to achieve what the awardees have done.

I feel, awards can serve their purpose better if they are seen to be well deserved, if they are given publicly and if they are given in time.

The persons who choose the awardees must be knowledgeable, persons of high integrity and must have unambiguous criteria before them on how to choose the awardees. If this happens, one hopes, the right people will get awards. Some deserving people may still get left out, but at least those who receive the awards will be deserving. If wrong people are chosen to receive awards, this will only have demotivating effect. An impression will go around that whatever one may do, the award will go to someone with right influence. Merit must be the only reason for awards and this can be ensured only if those who decide the awards are knowledgeable as well as persons of impeccable integrity.

Awards must also be given publicly. When someone publicly receives an award to the applause of an audience, it motivates him/her all the more to achieve better. It also inspires others more effectively. In today's world of media explosion, anything given away publicly actually reaches much more people than we can possibly imagine.

The awards must also be given in time. If someone receives an award while he/she is still working and is a familiar face, this will inspire and motivate more people and will receive better media coverage.

I am happy that an actor of the calibre of Pran has been chosen for the Dada Saheb Phalke Award. While he has portrayed positive characters like in the movie 'Upkar', he has generally been known for his roles as a villain. It is not easy to play a negative character. Dada Saheb Phalke award to Pran is a recognition of this. I wish, he had received the award earlier, but better late than never.

Hello! Thanks for visiting my blog. I've to visit in return .

I admit I love recognition, especially when something I've been involved with has brought me self satisfaction. I make an effort to acknowledge the achievements of others and to say thank you

Well said about awards, they sure encourage and motivate people to perform well and are precious in the eyes of common man!!

So, they need to be given purely based on merit, given on time and the people who get them should rightly deserve them as they become a role model to others!!

Pran is a versatile actor who rightly deserves and glad he was recognised!! :)
