34. In and around Shimla

Last week, I was in and around Shimla for a couple of days. This was my third visit to Shimla. I found a lot of construction work going on and traffic jams in the city, but the Ridge and the Mall retain their old world charm. From here, you get excellent views of the city and of the natural beauty scattered all around. The famous church, the post office and other old buildings look quite strong. In the evenings, huge crowds flow out on the Ridge and the Mall. I must admit that walking with crowds has its own pleasure. We are basically social beings and solitude is not something we can relish beyond a point.

Around Shimla, the views are stunning. Kufri, Narkanda, Chail - all are places worth visiting. The weather is excellent around this time of the year in Himachal. Although the apple season is nearing its end, many gardens were full of trees overburdened with the fruit. Near villages, white nets could be seen spread out over apple trees to protect the fruit from hail-storm. On road-side everywhere, apple could be seen being loaded on trucks.

And yes, I saw monkeys at many places and spent a lot of time watching their pranks. Let me leave you with some pictures of the visit. More will follow in subsequent posts.
