40. Exhibition of masks

A fascinating exhibition of masks is currently on at the Civil Services Officers' Institute, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. 150 masks reflecting the cultural heritage of India are on display. Each mask is an exquisite piece of art with brilliant use of colours. The masks represent the local customs, religious beliefs and practices of communities.

Masks have been used all over the world for centuries. With passage of time, these have become stylish, modern and colourful. Masks are used in parades, theatres, dances and games. They add to the fun and effect. Some tribes in India used masks to keep away evil spirits, illnesses and natural calamities like droughts, floods and earthquakes.

In old films, masks were used by criminals to hide their identity. Things have changed now. Modern day criminals do not require masks any longer. They have become totally transparent.
