33. A different world- II

Anybody who goes to Leh these days makes it a point to visit the Pangong lake, about 150 kilometres away from Leh. This is largely because the place has been made famous by some block-buster Hindi films. In " Three Idiots", Aamir Khan is finally discovered on the banks of the Pangong lake. In "Jab tak hai jaan", Shahrukh Khan meets Anushka Sharma on the banks of the Pangong.

It is about 5 hours journey from Leh. We started immediately after breakfast, because we wanted to return the same day. The way to Pangong is enchanting with beautiful monasteries tucked over little hillocks. Rancho school of 'Three Idiots' is also on the way and so is the beautiful old royal palace, known as Shey palace.

One goes higher and higher until one reaches the 17590 ft high Chang La pass. Army has made arrangements here to provide tea, hot momos and medical help to those who may need it.  Once we had our fill at Chang La, we started the journey down the mountains.

The first view of the Pangong is rather deceptive with only a small blue strip being visible from a gap between the mountains. But as you drive a little more, suddenly the beautiful lake unfolds itself in its full splendor.  There are mountains of different hues surrounding the blue lake. Standing at the same place, you can click pictures of the Pangong with different types of mountains in the background. The water is crystal clear.

The lake is about 130 kms. long, 60% of which is in China. The maximum width of the lake is 5 kms.

There are a number of small eating places near the lake. Although we returned to Leh the same day, I saw tented accommodation on the bank available for hiring. I missed the evening and early morning views of the Pangong. I thought, the next time I visit Pangong, I would make it a point to stay in a tent in the night. That will make the experience complete.
