Mawlynnong in the East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya has the distinction of having been rated as the cleanest village of Asia. It is located about 90 kilometres from Shillong along the India-Bangladesh border. There are about 100 households in the village. One finds no litter as one walks through the village. All waste is collected in dustbins made of bamboo. It is totally different from any other village one can see in the country. Close-by is a bridge formed out of natural tree roots, Meghalaya is so famous for. There is also an 80-feet high 'machaan' made of bamboo, from where one can see the natural beauty spread all around. The more I visit Meghalaya, the more I feel that people in the rest of the country are hardly aware of the treasures this North Eastern State has.
